El Retiro Library is in El Retiro Park, which is located at 126 Vista del Parque, Redondo Beach, off of Pacific Coast Highway.

The landscaping is being maintained by Wednesday gardeners: Gloria Balcom.

Bulbs were planted across from the library.

El Retiro Mural
Painted by Dean Bardos. Mural for El Retiro Library was donated by the club.

The Riviera Garden Club put a fence around the succulent garden created by Phyllis De Crescrenzo and put sod on the empty space next to the tennis court.

Victory Gardens
Marilyn Rubin presented pictures, posters and information about Victory Gardens during the World Wars. The participants planted vegtables to take home. Research was done by Marilyn as well as by the Wednesday gardeners.

Seasonal Planting
About 20 people attended and enjoyed this RGC community outreach – creating a myriad of beautiful, colorful baskets. Two new members joined after attending this event. This is a return engagement for our enthusiastic Chair, Pati Johnson, who is already planning another project!

A Basket for All Seasons

Riviera Garden Club member Pati Johnson gave a one hour hands-on demonstration/workshop to fifteen guests at El Retiro Library. This event combined donations from different groups with community outreach. Donations included supplies from the Friends of the Torrance Library and baskets from the members of the Riviera Garden Club. Pati generously donated her honorarium from the Friends of the Torrance Library to the Riviera Garden Club.

Pati and co-president Wendy Tsuji donated their Saturday morning to this community event. After Pati’s instruction, each of the fifteen guests began assembling a basket to take home. This proved to be such a fun way to get over one’s fear of making beautiful plant arrangements in baskets. Everyone enjoyed the workshop and asked about the club that had sponsored it. Pati was ready with leaflets with our contact information. It was a successful outreach program.
